Kiva - Loans that Change Lives

In last week's class, we discussed various programs and policies that are effective in the transferability between nations. I believe Carol mentioned a US microcredit program that has had great success abroad and now in America as well. Tonight on the ABC evening news, a nonprofit called Kiva was featured which is doing just this. (Carol, does this ring a bell?) The piece featured a variety of small business owners that have submitted profiles on Kiva's website in hopes of receiving loans from Americans (ranging from a cake delivery small business in the Bronx to a BBQ caterer on the West Coast). You can learn more here: http://www.kiva.org/.

  1. I will own up to being a Kiva contributor. From all I have seen/read/experienced about Kiva has been very impressive. It's worth visiting the site.

For the last two years our Xmas presents to family have included loans on their behalf to Kiva recipients. We match family member with appropriate lendees (my father was an electrical contractor, so loan on his behalf went to a Guatemalan electrician)

  2. I knew about the microcredit movement in the US, but did not remember the name of the organization. I think Tamara or John or Nancy knew it -- someone on that side of the room?

I have yet to donate to them, but I like the idea of microcredit here in the states as well as overseas.
